Would a 2013-2014 f30 320i/328i or an e60 530i be a bad idea for a first car?

BMW Performance Center for new owner

I recently purchased 2022 M340i. Received email invite to attend "New Owner Driving School" at the BMW Performance Center in SC. When I called to schedule I discovered it's only 2 hours of driving and 1 hour Q&A. Can anyone who has attended describe their experience? I could use your inputs in making a decision to incur the costs of hotel and 400 mile drive.

Subject: just a quick question...

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

can anyone explain to me why BMW made the 4 series, with 4 doors? when the 3 series was supposed to be the 4 door model, then the 4 series was supposed to be the 2 door coupe? the 4 door 4 series just seems less practical, and more expensive than the 3 series 4 door models. why though?

1st BMW Purchased Myself!

The title says it all! The first car I learned on and drove when I was a kid was my father's '88 735i and have wanted a new one since then... some sentimental value I believe. That was a pretty high tech car at the time with airbags, electric adjustable headrest and heated seats with of course a real wood trim.

13 years later, can't quite afford another 7 but I'm pretty ecstatic with this sleek 4.

I hope that one day all those who dream of their 1st bmw, get theirs when the time is right.

Subject: 12/21 Update to my "Scratch" - Please bear with me!

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Back about a month and a half ago I had posted my CPO G20's "scratch" that was a scrape that was all the way down to the metal and "fixed" using touch up paint: https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/comments/qukjzq/quick_update_to_my_scratch/

After a few weeks of going back and forth, the dealership's service department just gave me the runaround, initially changing my appointment from 11/30 to 12/8 due to a lack of loaner cars available. I had spoken with them stating that I knew that they don't do that kind of work on-site and that it's only there because my sales professional wanted to have the car looked at with the sales manager as well as the service manager together. I get a call back immediately from another service person stating that they do not do the work on site and that I have to take my car to a vendor - once again, I reiterated that I'm not looking to have the work done right away but needed approval, but regardless, m appointment was cancelled.

A week and a half goes by and at this point I'm getting the cold shoulder from all parts of the department, so I wrote a nice long email with pictures to the Customer Relations Director of the chain of dealerships. He got back to me immediately, apologized, and approved the fix on the spot.

On 12/13, I took my car in to have it fixed, and the service manager stated that he's gonna "hook me up with a ride back home" to which I was like "well I live 20 miles from here, when will the car be done?" (eluding to my need for a loaner because I had stuffs to do and upcoming appointments). He goes "oh it'll be done today or tomorrow", to which I was skeptical since I don't recall paint jobs taking a day, but he was adamant so I got the Lyft home. For the next 3 days I got the runaround about how the car isn't ready yet which I saw coming a mile away, and ended up having to walk to my dentist appointment, and dropping off packages via my bicycle (was good exercise lol).

Finally, on 12/16 I get a call stating that the car is ready, so I head there to check out the work. Much to my surprise, the only work that was done was a filler of the scrape, and what appeared to be just painted a giant oval on the trunk and the bumper, and the color wasn't even close. The parts painted were bright white whereas the original paint was a tiny bit off-white, so from the top of the trunk to the bottom off the bumper it was off white, bright white, off white, bright white, and off white again. The badge on the trunk was also caked with sh*t because I guess it was too much work to tape up the badge properly during the repaint, and I could literally feel where the filler had been applied. The WORST part was, that they painted just part of the trunk. I'm no expert at car paint but how does a person know what parts were sanded and what parts were clear coat? I cannot see how they didn't just paint over some of the existing paint... but also there were parts of the repaint that were BAD, like ultra-orange-peel bad. So I told them that it's not to my liking and let them know that the paint was off, texture, etc... and they said that they would get it fixed. I forgot to add that there were bumps on the paint because their painting area was dirty and dust had dried over it - real winners.

At this point I'm pretty upset about the car because a simple sanding a repaint turned into god-knows-what hackjob of a repair, and the entire time I'm watching my app to see where the car is, etc... and of course, it sat outside Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday night in a parking lot with the rear driver window opened with what appeared to be a tarp covering the "fixed area". If they did reapply some paint, I don't think parking it outside with a tarp over the surface is the right way to go about curing anything.

So now today, 12/21, the service manager gives me a call and says that the car is ready and that "it looks great" but when I mentioned if he made sure that they didn't just repaint over the same surface without properly sanding the surface, I got a "I wasn't there during the repair job" answer.

I guess we'll see this afternoon when it'll supposedly be ready.

Subject: Shift by wire possibilities?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

So this might sound pointless but since all the modern ones use shift by wire, is there any way to configure or code in aftermarket to make the right paddle shift the car to drive from neutral and the left to reverse when stron stepping on the brake of course?
