I have a 2013 528i. Cosmetically it is beautiful. Inside and out. I bought this car 7 months ago for 16500. A deal at the time. I bought it from a bmw dealership. Me and the salesman used to work together. So I believe I got a good deal. 98000 miles on it. But again. It ran and looked beautiful.
Fast forward 7 months. Low engine pressure light came on. I stopped the car immediately. Restarted it. No more light. 12 hours later. The next day. Light comes on again. I was already on the highway. Kept on driving. Heard no knocks. Temp ok. Oil just changed. Thought it may be a sensor. This was not the case.
Car stoped accelerating. Pulled over. Car wouldn’t turn over.
Towed it to the dealer.
12 k for a new engine. Supposedly it’s ruined. Have not gotten a second opinion. Dealership looked at it for two weeks.
I love the car. Buying any new, or used car is costly. I just don’t know if it’s financially smart to spend the 12k on a 2013 car. Side bar- you can’t even buy a 10 Year old Honda for less then 10 k.
Is this thing a money pit? What if I fix the engine then the tranny gos.
I’m out of a car and negative 11 k on equity. Should I invest in it. New engine. Cosmetically great. But also. What fails next.
Bit of a rant. But this is a major financial decision for me.

Hello my dear friends of the BMW community! Since I officialy became a driver in October of last year, I've been interested in BMWs and I finally got to drive one last week, and oh boy was it a life changing and woderful experience!
Little backstory here - I'm 19, from Europe and I am actively following a bunch of car communities, but I really don't drive that often, only if I have to. I don't have my own car so when it's needed I drive my mom's 2009 Honda Jazz (Honda Fit for the Americans). It has a NA 1.4 litre engine putting out about 80hp and a whopping 120Nm of torque. Those are the kind of figures I'm used to. It's an okay car for what it is, but it's just that - a little city econobox.
Now, I've driven some other cars, like my friend's 2008 Audi A3 1.9 TDI and 2003 Ford Fiesta (I think it was 1.3 petrol engine, something like that) I got my license on a (I don't know what year) Golf 7 1.6 TDI and that's practically it. All small city cars with a manual gearbox.
Last week I got my wish fullfilled by finally driving a BMW which was also the first time I drove a car with an automatic gearbox. And it was one of the best experiences of my life.
The BMW in question was a 2016 525d touring xdrive owned by a guy from my mother's family. Now, I know that the people of this sub are endorsers of six and above number of cylinders, but bear with me, this car is astronomically more powerful than anything I've ever driven, probably combined. Its 218 horsepower is already extreme to me, but its 400Nm of torque is beyond my grasp of reality (remember, my standard was 80HP and 120Nm).
Now, I really am not the person who cares about huge numbers, I think anything about 400 horsepower would be too much and insane to me to even think about. So this was a way bigger jump than I even needed at my experience.
Now onto the good stuff: the review of the drive! My god, it was wonderful. I only drove it for about 5 minutes but it was on winding forest roads and was more than enough to leave a huge impression on me.
Firstly, the automatic gearbox while very weird to me in the first minute, left the biggest impression. I now realised how much I actually suck in changing gears after this. I was never really too good at shifting gears myself so I think my choice of car would be automatic in the future.
The ZF8 is wonderful and so smooth unlike an Audi A4 2022 in which I was riding the day before whose dual clutch kept throwing me and my friend all over the place when going from first to second to third. Maybe the car was messed up, it was a rental though.
The steering was a bit heavier than I expected but also more direct than expected. Extremely nice if you ask me since I also drove a 2019 Golf Variant which had a steering system so vague I was dissapointed. This is a nice little touch from BMWs sportscar heritage, to have such a direct feeling steering system.
The suspension was a bit more stiffer than I expected because we were on 16 inch tires too. But it wasn't jumpy like the shitboxes I'm used to so that's good. Only wished the car had more supportive seats (it was bought used in almost baseline spec with some fearures).
The engine response and the torque also blew me away. I'm used to literally having to slam the gas pedal down to the floor on the Honda to accelerare because the engine is so small. Here I just had to rest my foot on the throttle and the twin scroll turbo and the 4 cylinder diesel did the work by promptly slamming me back into my seat with all the torque. That in combination with the smoothness of the ZF8 left the biggest impact on me.
I drove the car up to 115kph on winding roads. While I was doing 90kph it felt I was going only 30 due to how smooth and planted the chasis felt in combination with the xdrive which promptly sent me flying out of every corner I entered. I haven't even driven a rear wheel driven car up to this point so this was wild to me.
Finally, after I stopped the vehicle I got out and remember I actually wasn't looking down at my speedo at all but I still saw the speed I was going. It was the HUD I was looking at and my brain didn't even register that I was looking at it, it was just that natural. Coming from old cars I thought the HUD might be distracting since I predicted it would mess with my peripheral vision, but as I proved to myself I was wrong since I didn't even register that I was looking at a projection.
Now this experience changed me forever and altered my perception about everything regarding cars. I came to a conclussion that not everything has to have the biggest number of cylinders or the biggest performance numbers, as this was already way more than I ever experienced. I've yet to drive a good Audi, Mercedes, Porsche or something of that sort, but for now I only have this experience to present, and it was awesome!! I'm glad I originally chose BMWs as a car I'd maybe one day want, because now I want my car in the future to match or exceed this experience!
To all of you BMW fans, love your vehicles because they are genuinely amazing, don't be ashamed if you don't have the biggest engine, be careful how you drive and most importantly, have fun in them, because I'll say it once again, they are amazing!!! ♥️
