Jumping in a bit late, here, but I've been indisposed. .

On my first non family programming job, in Northern Virginia, where I was doing more than they'd expected, I got a surprise raise because my boss saw me reading the yard sales in the newspaper and thought I was job hunting. I wouldn't have known the reason, but his secretary told me. Just a thought. .

I'm doing dispatch of DME goods to patients. Lots of them speak Spanish, and my first solo call with no safety net was Mandarin... a pissed off old Chinese man.

I kinda dig working through a translator though - and with Spanish, I listen along carefully and pick more and more of it up.

Hopefully this gig lasts a while. If I'm good at it, hopefully they decide to make me permanent.

I do this thing with every job, where I start it going, "this is insane, there is no way I can handle it..."

Then I start hitting it out of the ballpark, and I become a rock star.

Then they start getting upset because they get it in their head that even though I already do more than they expected, there is even MORE that I can do, or that I've started holding back on doing all that I was doing originally.

But... they don't want to give me a fat raise or a promotion or anything like that. They just want me to give them more, while they give me the same as they started.

Then things go bad.

My boss put me in a sales position. Dumb mistake. I'm a much better marketing professional than sales professional. Yes, I can sell. But it wears on me. I'm much better at writing cracking ad copy and identifying the motivation of the audience. Lately I've been having fun writing verions of pitch scripts that target the different motivational hormones. Oxytocin for bonding, serotonin for status, endorphins for excitement and just plain dopamine for pleasure. It's fun to rework a whole landing page to target moms or jocks or grandfathers. The offers I get nowadays are for 90k, but I have to turn them down because we're working through my wife's anxiety issues. I hope I can get her back on talk therapy before the winter blues. It would be nice to have a social life again.

Which PC things? I have a constant series of them! I still don't have my two Windows 10 computers talking to one another, I ordered a set of Alexa power switches and a couple of USB adapters from Amazon and they say they were delivered, but I never saw them. My Amazon tablet is slowly dying. . . I've been using the Surface to log in to FaceBook lately.

The two Windows machines talking to one another. Pretty sure that is the easy one. You just have to call me.

If I really wanted to make money, I'd get a contractor's license. The average age in my town (and I am not exaggerating) is 70. Every contractor I know is booked out three months. This is where tech millionaires retire so they can wake up, go crabbing in their needlessly fancy 20' boats, eat trash at the local dive, and enjoy sweater weather with no rain. My stoner buddy just paints houses whenever the weather is fine. My general contractor friend keeps raising his pitches and no one bats an eye. I could work from 9:30 to 3:00 every day and probably be fine. My electrician charged about $200/hour labor. There's no apparent upper limit.

I hate manual labor. It always involves things that will hurt you, and eventually make you a broken down old man.

My grandpa lived to 96 and was doing manual labour until he was about 90.  I think it's just a matter of taking adequate safety precautions and not thinking "just this once" is ever okay.

I just realized a couple of days ago that contractors aren't the only professionals in demand out here. There are only about two website companies in my town. So the 1,000 companies here need me. I'll see if I can pull $120/hr.

Yes, we should.

And good news. I just had two local companies ASK me to manage their marketing today. Looks like my goal of clearing out my wife's and my school loans by this time next year is on track. What a crazy moment in my life.

New job is going okay, but they're stuck in the 80s.  I take calls from contractors and put the info on PAPER.  Our whole office runs on paper.  The computer system is almost an afterthought, and was clearly programmed no later than the early 90s.

Small businesses seem to suffer from this. I'm not sure exactly what it is - but it is a1 part inertia, one part fear of the unknown - and a good dose of not having the vision to accept the initial costs being steep when the savings are hard to visualize.

They see IT as a cost center. That still happens even in fortune 500 companies. There is a disconnect between understanding that the systems and infrastructure allows the growth that creates the exponential profit generation for the company.

I've been relying on the Goto Next button and the last few times I've visited it only showed me a few rooms. This time it showed me everything I've been missing since October, lol. I guess I'll stop relying on the Goto Next button.

Are you using Telnet or the web client? That doesn't sound right, either way.

Goto Next should take you through a loop of all the rooms with new messages.
