Goto Next should take you through a loop of all the rooms with new messages.

I've been relying on the Goto Next button and the last few times I've visited it only showed me a few rooms. This time it showed me everything I've been missing since October, lol. I guess I'll stop relying on the Goto Next button. 

 

 

I tend to suspect operator error - but there is no doubt that sometimes Citadel misbehaves. Ig even admits there is a lot of legacy code in there that causes strange behavior - so maybe you had some alignment of the stars...

Thanny, I am Jack's complete lack of surprise that I find you apologizing for an offense against me that I did not even realize you had committed. I have a vague recollection of us having a difference of opinion in the distant past regarding politics... maybe about gun control? The last couple of years have been brutal on partisan divides - and I certainly took some hard lines and ramped up my rhetoric to a more aggressive and hostile volume than I have in the past... but... I don't hold grudges, and on the relative scale of thing - I did not realize you felt estranged from me to a degree that would require any apologizes. A handful of long time friends got blocked by me on social media over the last couple of years - a very unusual and extreme step for me. You were not, to my knowledge, one of them. 

So... water under the bridge. We'll pick up from BEFORE whatever encounter did not go as pleasantly as possible. :) Welcome home. 

You *should* have gotten here sooner. We need to build up a strong core base and get some traffic generated here. It is dying on the vine.

It does feel like home. On one screen I have a citadel, on the other screen I have a brand new C64 game rolling. I could only wish for this level of multitasking in the past. 1987 me would squee like a little girl to see my current setup and capabilities. What you're doing here is great. The blush came off the Facebook rose a long time ago. Hopefully they mismanage the Oculus opportunity as much as everything else they've touched.

I'm of the firm opinion that I've gotten everything I wished for prior to the age of 17 except a Porsche 959. 

I could probably get you a couple more "callers" but they'd be mostly women which would mess up the locker room, sausage-fest vibe we have going on.

I don't know, Brenda Daniels had bigger balls than any of the guys who called Citadel BBSes, and probably could have kicked all our asses.

I saw that. Guess who is Jack's O-Face right now? 

I mean, I've been telling them they were headed for DIGG 2.0/MySpace territory for the last several years - and just a few days before this article hit, I had made a post - tagged Facebook in it, and noted... 

"It isn't just me, although I was among the first - but traffic on Facebook in general has had a HUGE decline. You're starting to feel the affects of your bad choices the last several years..." 

Then, like, 2 days later, this article hits. 

And trust me... For a few months I've been making posts and telling them, "Go ahead, fucking BAN ME FOR LIFE... I'm exactly the kind of user you need, who built your strength - and when you lose me, all the LURKERS will follow - because there won't be any fucking DRAW to your site." 


Everything in social media I've ever abandoned, all the way back to Citadel - was on life support shortly after my departure. And... don't interpret that wrong - I'm just frequently the FIRST rat to jump ship - the canary in the coalmine. It isn't that my leaving is what kills the site - it is that when I leave, something has gone wrong enough or changed enough that soon a lot of OTHER people are going to leave too. I fucking hate how people interpret comments like these on my part as arrogance or hubris or an inflated sense of self-worth. 

I guess I tend to do this with music scenes, fashion, technology. 

FPGA for example, is an incredible technology - but the COMMUNITY surrounding it has gone downhill as it has gone more mainstream - in particular as it has attracted tons of Generation Nintendo users. I was very active - now I avoid them all. I still enjoy the technology - evangelize for it - but the community sucks balls now. 

I like novel things and tight communities but I hate experiences that attract the societal average - because - the average of society is a pretty base, ignorant, group-think infested thing. 

Facebook is in trouble. A big part of it is that Apple changed their rules on how apps can track and target advertising - that is the financial problem. But the other problem is that what I am describing - lots of other, less vocal people are kind of hitting the same wall and going, "this is boring, it annoys me, it isn't rewarding - I'm not getting the same dopamine hit I was from it..." and so they're looking for a new high, a new hit, a new drug. Part of that is that Facebook fucked with the formula based on their partisan bias - and it alienated roughly half their audience... and as that audience jumped ship... the other half found THEIR motivation for logging on diminished, too... because there was no one to fight with. That happens - too. The reason Facebook was at such a peak of traffic and content the last 4 years was driven largely by escalating conflict. This was a problem all the way back for Citadel too... What happened after huge periods of intense conflict? Traffic to that Citadel would just drop off a cliff - at least for a while. The problem with Social Media is that when your site implodes like this - there is some OTHER site ready to pick up the slack... the way MySpace collapsed and Digg took off, and Digg collapsed and Twitter and Facebook jumped ahead. We kind of had a circuit of a half dozen or so Citadels that kept passing the torch around. Social media doesn't do that, it replaces, and you never get your turn back at bat. You become Digg or MySpace or Google+. 

So depending on how far down the bottom is - Facebook *may* be a deadman walking - at least as we've always known it. It may end up like Digg, AOL and Yahoo... a "Once we were the top dog," news aggregate. 

They're in trouble though - and I love it. Especially being that they banned me from advertising this site because at first they labeled it a "hate site" and then when I proved that wasn't the case they called my postings "Spam."

They're tanking so hard. Google just moved forward with making Android app tracking similar to the policy for iOS app tracking - which means Facebook's biggest revenue stream just hit an iceberg. 

They're in *serious* trouble.

Well... glad to see you back - that was far too long of an extended absence. I ended up with a 6 day suspension for saying "I'm going out to suck on a fag, now..." 

from Facebook, about... 8 or 9 days ago. I dunno. I'm going to give them a 30 day minimum suspension from my content and traffic to remind them who owns Bartertown. 

Or, I may just shut down my account - because... Fuck those guys - and they're on the ropes. No better time to kick 'em in the balls than when they're already on the ground crying tears over their $200 billion drop in value.

"Facebook has suspended your account for 6 days for hate speech..." 

If I am in fact, a FAG, which would be indicated by sucking one off - than how can it be hate speech? Isn't it me taking OWNERSHIP of hate speech, taking it AWAY from those who hate, like black people using the word "nigger"? 

(Which you can say here - without getting a ban, or worrying about Neil Young trying to get you canceled from Spotify... I'd even let you say it in a connotation I disagree with using it - though I'd admonish you and call you ignorant for using it that way, most likely. Because we let adults use language to communicate here, even if it offends.) 

The other alternative is that I was using a common and well understood English phrase to say I was going out for a smoke. 

Facebook is upset because they think I really meant something ELSE by using it. Or because I said it and it made them THINK of the other way the word is used... 

Either way... basically, suspension for *thought* crime.
