And one more time, I'm going to remind everyone - I *see* you calling in...

It doesn't work if you all LURK. Some of you have to actually post comments. Otherwise, this place is just me talking to myself. Don't be shy.

But Lurking is what I am good at!  I've been doing it for decades now!

I even lurked at the console when callers were on the BBS.  ;)

I have literally plead my case with the developers that a like button is a necessary evil for at least the webcit. It encourages content creators to create more content, and it allows lurkers to interact without actually saying anything. It is really the one brilliant mechanism that the social media giants stumbled on.

It is where you get the Facebook dopamine rush. The Like button is the crack cocaine of online communities.

So, as a user - when I'm on the other Citadel like this - uncensored.citadel.org, I often find myself wondering if the sysop is lurking and watching my posts - and in fact, I feel this way on social media sites, too - like, "is someone watching me entering a message and then backing it out?"

But - it doesn't work that way anymore. I can't lurk. I don't see a console like a real Citadel. I miss that. I did like to lurk on console - and occasionally I'd pick up the line and blow line noise into the phone RIGHT before they were about to hit <S>ave on a really long rant. Because... "I am God in this reality!"

Thanks for visiting. I was talking last night about the idea of having the old sysops set up a floor or room as their own 916 Citadel - or even sending me a Pi and having me configure it as a stand alone BBS on my network with their DNS and my static IP address.

Of course, I had been drinking - but that doesn't mean it *couldn't* be done, if anyone was interested. :)

My goal there is that I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and that my Citadel isn't the atmosphere everyone wants to visit - but I'd like to see more traffic for this kind of alternate social media and less for the giant corporations like Facebook - and I think that if there were a couple of Citadels that had a different atmosphere than mine - it would be good for overall traffic. I think that some people are hesitant to visit my BBS because they disagree with me philosophically or ideologically - and I'd like them to have a destination that encourages them to connect to these kind of BBSes anyhow. It would be great if we could get at least one more of the old school Sacramento Cits back online in name and ran by the original sysop.

I'm building out this tiny 100-sqft storage shed in my backyard into an office space. Gonna run some Cat6 out there for gigabit internet. It's about 250ft of cable. Does anybody know if that distance from the router will slow me down? Probably everyone on here has more technical experience than I do.

IIRC, the limit for Cat6 cabling is 100 meters, which is like 330 feet.

This article should help. 100m...

Sort of. There are other variables that can affect your speed. Every hop is going to introduce some latency. Theoretical maximums and actual real world performance rarely align, and never in your favor. :)

Had someone tell me the BBS is slow and basically not well designed.

That is *actually* the point.

This isn't overproduced Opera Rock.

It is hardcore punk.

Slick things are a huge part of the problem with society.

That is a pretty cool official Pink Floyd tour T-Shirt you are wearing. I've seen 10,000 other people wearing the exact same

 shirt.

My shirt is a hand drawn Suicidal Tendencies shirt. I did the art. I did the logo. There is 1 in the world, and I own it.

The primo, uncut and pure stuff will only be available here, going forward. You might get a little heavily cut, weak ass substitute on Facebook or Twitter every now and then - but if you want the real deal, you've got to come to the source.

When I get drunk and I wanna ramble - it'll be here.

Glad I'm under 100m, then, if not by much. The floor in my office is stained and has a double layer of polyurethane on it now, having cured for two days. I can finally put my ladder on it to drywall the ceiling.

I love projects so much. And having aesthetic control over a whole workspace is somehow thrilling. Once I started customizing my work environment more "in my own particular idiom" at my last job, my productivity started peaking and I disabused myself of some learned helplessness I had adopted during my latest depressive downcycle. Having an aesthestically interesting workspace enchants me into the process. Getting started was always my weak spot. I love my work (SEO) but insensibly revolt against cranking the dynamo.

What should I call it? It's not a den, really. It's an office but I want a cooler name for it.

I agree... getting everything to a place where the workflow and spaces suit your personal style is so rewarding - and when it looks aesthetically awesome - that is just gravy.

Something is wrong with me right now. I don't have words. I want to say things, in my usual voice - and the words just aren't there. I'm feeling dumb, and it is frustrating - because I've got huge thoughts in my head, but I cant manifest them into words to respond. That isn't typical for me, but it happens. I can't afford it right now - because I feel a lot of pressure to be highly engaging to keep people coming back.

There is also a tremendous reward in doing the actual physical labor required to make your space your own. That shouldn't be under-estimated. I didn't hire someone to come in and make this happen, I put the sweat in myself.

I call mine my control center or command console. If you've seen images of it, it looks like that. A reconfigurable U shaped wall of LCDs and notebooks and keyboards. Like the Captain's bridge. My war station. :)

If you haven't seen it, I can post pictures.

I've enjoyed the pictures thoroughly, even zoomed in. Command center... Hmmm. The Bridge gives a nice Picard feel. I'll keep thinking about it.

And I do expect to spend more time here. Facebook is all but dead to me.

Facebook is literally what I did when I was bored. I'm always doing *something* else, too. But I was so sick of their constant attempts to police my thoughts and attitudes. It started out innocuously enough - with their concerns over "cyber-bullying," but that opened up the floodgates into and ever increasing wall of Delores Umbridge styled "Decries from the Ministry of Magic." It literally progressed almost exactly like those scenes in the movie/book.

It is amazing that the Left doesn't see that they're the ones wearing the Dark Mark.
