Subject: Reporter seeking people that have cut subscription(s) / embraced more piracy partially in response to high inflation
Hello. I'm a reporter interested in writing a story about how as inflation has risen, some people have turned to piracy as a way to cut costs. Message me if you fit this criteria and might be willing to chat (if quoted you it would be anonymous). My beat is more US-focused but would potentially be open to speaking to someone from another country as well. Thanks!

It seems that some pirated versions need to connect to the internet to use dlc, which means that it will break when the Ubisoft servers shut down. I want to download a version that lets me play the dlc offline, since I'm going to lose all of the dlc that I purchased. Does that exist anywhere?
Subject: Block The Spot is broken - any alternatives?
I just tried to run BlockTheSpot, and it gave an error message in red text, starting with "Invoke-WebRequest : 404: Not Found". I went to the GitHub to see if I could download an updated file, but the links just give zero byte files.
Does anyone know of any alternatives, to take the ads out of the Windows program?
Subject: Need Help With xmanager please
I downloaded the latest Spotify version with xmanager.
Everything seems to be working except the most important function I am looking for: downloading music to be available offline.
I click the download button in a playlist but nothing happens.
Am I doing something wrong here?
Thanks for your help.

Subject: Smithsonian Roku app access with friend’s cable log in?
R/cord cutter deleted my post. Maybe better here.
Got Dad to cut the cord recently. Him and I now split DirectTV Stream (‘Choice’ package). No issues using it in 2 different locations. Significant savings for Dad ($140 for Xfinity cable only!).
I’d love to get him access to Smithsonian app so he has all their content on demand. It is not included in DTTVStream Choice, and even if it was then it would be the live channel and not the on demand app.
Through friends and family, I can get a log in for Xfinity, Dish, possibly Spectrum. All of these would provide access to Smithsonian app according to Smithsonian log in page.
However, I’m aware that some cable providers only allow you to stream apps if on home wifi. Can anyone confirm which cable provider would allow me to watch Smithsonian app outside of “home wifi”? For example, get my aunt’s Dish log in from Michigan and share it with my Dad so he can watch Smithsonian App on his Roku in Rhode Island?
Lastly, is there no way to subscribe to JUST Smithsonian? I would pay $5/month to have access to their app. But on their site it looks like you NEED a cable provider.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: "Pirating" a 3D modeling program, can't find what value the Platform ID is tied to
I'm trying to semi-pirate a certain 3D modeling program mainly for Grand Theft Auto V. I don't really know if this is the right subreddit to post this in, so I apologize in advance if this violates the rules. Upfront I'd like to say that downloading someone's crack is not something I am going to do.
Some context that might be helpful regarding this program:
- The license is tied to a Platform ID.
- A new Platform ID is issued for each new computer, and each new Platform ID issues a new 15-day trial license.
- There is no limit to the number of Platform IDs you can have, and thus no limit to the number of licenses you can get.
- The program can detect if it is being run in a virtual machine, so that's out of the question.
So, what I want to do is to modify a value in my operating system that changes the Platform ID. I've been able to do this in the past quite successfully for over a year. The following changed the platform ID in the past:
- Changing the MAC address, both via third-party software (TMAC) and natively (Random Hardware Addresses)
- Restarting into Safe Mode (with or without Networking)
- Performing a clean reinstall of Windows
- Yanking the power cord out of the computer (inconsistent, but yes, really)
- Restarting (sometimes a restart will very randomly and inconsistently change it)
Unfortunately, none of these methods work anymore. I've tried the following and know that the Platform ID is no longer/not tied to:
- MAC address
- DeviceId and ProductId registry keys
- Device name
- Windows installation
Notably for number 4, a reimage not generating a new Platform ID tells me that it's probably now linked to some static value, such as the BIOS serial number or possibly the hardware ID/hash.
So I guess what I'm looking for is:
- What value(s) can I look into changing to get a new Platform ID?
- Could I "crack" the program myself by way of decompiling it or something?
- Could I trick it into running in a virtual machine? How could the program detect something like that?
