Subject: Building an Amiga 1200

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I have a nice, working Amiga 1200 motherboard. I don't have a keyboard or case.

If you were to build up your fanciest A1200, how would you do it? I'm torn between the Checkmate case and just a replacement case in some nonstandard color.

The keyboard seems to be the hardest thing to acquire right now-- the replacements are sold out or unavailable, and they only seem to show up on ebay at massively inflated prices. A convertor/adapter is not out of the question, I guess, since using an original seems to be unworkable.

Any advice or pointers to good parts and stuff?

edit to add: I also need to decide on a power supply, although this motherboard has been modded so it can get power through a molex connector like from a PC power supply, so that may be easiest.

Subject: A1200 floppy stopped working (DF0:NDOS)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hi,

My A1200's floppy drive just stopped working. Every disk just appears as DF0:NDOS, or if you use a bootable disk it says "Not a DOS disk in device DF0". I've tried games, cover disks, data disks.

There's also a bot of a grindy noise as it tries to read the disk.

Any advice?

Thanks.

It is about time. Yeesh. It will be out June 2. I was playing around with the emulator on my computer. The annoying thing about Amiga games is that you have to look up the controls sometimes.

Anyone still using this software out there? This is the other software besides Scala MM that I am trying to get up and running for use in the "modern" age.

Both B&P and SJ were released for use by anyone after the acquisition of the company by M$. Side historical note trivia question, what company did the owners of B&P later create?

Did the A500 release in the US? Or is the A500 Mini the US’ introduction to the A500?

Subject: Damaged A500+ help JP9

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I have an Amiga 500 plus question. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but anyway.

I have a 500+ board that has been damaged by leaky battery.

I bought a real time clock module but I need to bridge JP9. JP9 has been corroded away.

If I bridge leg 11 of U36 to ground on the motherboard will this be the same as connecting jumper JP9? Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Working on a new city-builder game for the Blitz Basic Gamejam, What's the minimum targeted system you'd like to see a new Amiga city-builder run on?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

My plan is to have it run on a WB 1.3 A500 with 1mb but I'm unsure what the Amiga community is actually looking for!

Feel free to make any other suggestions for compatibility, but I'd like to go for a relatively stock/simple setup with minimal niceties such as compatibility with AmigaOS 3.2

It's also likely to end up being a game that'll benefit greatly from an accelerator of some kind as my current design document has it being relatively complex (less so than SimCity), which with it being written in Blitz Basic I'm unsure how performance will be in the end, as I've got no experience with Blitz Basic's performance on complex programs, there'll likely be a ton of optimisation I'll be able to do, but I'm very much taking this Gamejam as an opportunity to learn a lot more about the Amiga!

Subject: Could a "startup" company release a "personal computer" that also acts as a "console" in this day and age - with its own OS?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

With single board computers like the Radxa, Latte and Raspberry becoming increasingly more widespread and cheap, do you think we'll ever get any enterprising companies coming along and releasing their own "personal computer" using the aforementioned parts?

I'm thinking of all these occasions where a Chinese manufacturer has released a "retro handheld"... Could we see a similar wave where we see companies release their own hardware computers that have their own distinct ecosystems?

I'm just thinking of the Raspberry Pi 400... As well as "relaunched" home computers (including the Amiga Mini).

Could a "startup" company release a "personal computer" that also acts as a "console" in this day and age - with its own OS? Almost like Apple did in the early days of the home computer market...
