Subject: Building a clone ?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I fondly remember having an A500 as a kid, but being way too young and knowing basically zero english had forced my parents to load games for me and my sister and severly limited my knowledge then.

Are there any hardware kits for building something that will run amigaOS ? Since i never had anything other than a500, is there a reason i would get an A4000 ( or something like that ) to play some games, use dpaint again and try to learn to code and run demos ?

Subject: ECS Denise? Differences between 8373R3PD vs 8373R4PD?

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

I wanted to upgrade my A2000 chipset to ECS, so I recently purchased a 8373R4PD. The chip that arrived is a 8373R3PD. Is this still an ECS Denise? Is there any difference between the two chips? Thanks!

Subject: My Amiga 2000 with TF536

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

So last year a month or two before if found a new house with the wife and moved I bought an Amiga 2000 from someone on Kijiji. It was listed with the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and had a hard drive. The seller didn't into the details, and it had been online for while before I purchased and had shipped to me.

When I got I installed my 3.1.4 ROM into it and booted of the hard drive that has warn out bearings and didn't see any Sysinfo in his WB 1.3 that was installed, so I left it.

Today I got my TF536 card and installed it, I also got with the CF card adapter and CF card preinstalled with 3.1.4 WB plus the seller was night enough to put demos and games on it. I installed, pretty easy, powered up the Amiga and checked out sysinfo. Now I was ready to buy an ESC Angus and Denise chips for this Amiga but after seeing the sysinfo I realized I don't need to anymore. :)

So I looking for a few more things. I would like to know what size of screws does the case use because the ones I have are almost fully rounded, I hope I can buy them at homedepot.ca .. And is it possible to get the stablizer bar that I have seen in some Amiga 2000's that goes from the from to the back of the machine screwing down with one the back plates or are those super rare?

I have to find one of those watch battery things to replace the battery on the mainboard, it looks like the previous owner took card of the machine, caps and battery look fairly new though its could be just super clean inside. lol

And does the Amiga monitor that has the DB9 to DB23 cable and RCA inputs have stereo speaks? I only hear sounds from the white cable, not the red but from what I can see it looks the monitor only has 1 speaker.

New rubber feet for the A2000, any suggestions from Amazon? Mine has none installed.

And I have been out of the scene since the 80s, so I don't know what's cool in demos, any suggesions?

Thanks,

Subject: external vs internal Gotek questions (A500)

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Hello all, I am looking into a Gotek for my A500 and am debating whether to go internal or external. I am reviewing the benefits of each approach, and have a few lingering questions.

  • With an internal (DF0) Gotek installation, does a real external DF1 floppy drive remain usable? My understanding is that using a selector switch with an external Gotek disables the real floppy drive, but I assume this is not an issue when the Gotek is hardwired to DF0
  • I hear there are some utilities that can create .adf files from real Amiga disks, and vice versa. Are these typically able to write to either DF0 or DF1? Just want to see if an internal vs external Gotek would limit my options on this front.
  • In a number of installation guides, I've seen comments that the DF0 selector chip gets in the way of the RF shielding, to the point that some users end up removing the RF shield entirely. Are there any selector chip/switches that alleviate this issue?
  • If I do go external, the placement of the DF0 selector switch is a lingering issue. I'd rather not add a hole to my original A500 housing. Any recommendations on an elegant solution for this? Does anyone sell an external Gotek enclosure that includes a space for the switch, perhaps?

I'll likely have more follow-up questions but any feedback is much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Do Atari 2600 joysticks work on the Amiga? I am looking for a joystick for my A2000 and have been looking on amazon.ca as I cannot wait weeks to get one shipped if I ordered on Ebay or elsewhere.

Thanks,

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

So my sysinfo says I have the ESC Angus 2MB, yet when I look at he chip markings it says I have a 1MB Angus, and WB shows I have 1MB chip. Is this a common bug in Sysinfo?

Thanks,

[Reply] [ReplyQuoted] [Headers] [Print]

Greetings fellow Amigans.

Back in the day (early 90s) there was a BBS in Southern California, 310 area code. Run by a guy called Ed Brown iirc.

Anyone else remember that BBS and (long shot) know if Ed is still online somewhere?

I lived overseas at the time (someplace with no Amiga users) and Ed was kind enough to put software on floppies for me and mail them to me. Great BBS and good guy.
