Well, I got that story posted. Took me twice, since I accidentally deleted it instead of saving it the first time! It was even longer on the first try, but I typed in what I could remember the second time.

That's not what this message is about. Its about getting my desktop Dell properly connected to my home network so that it can communicate with other devices on the network, or at least see them! Donovan: one problem here is that I really don't have my own phone (or need it 99% of the time). I depend on Michelle to take and make calls for me. Sort of a private phone monitor who screens out junk calls. The problem comes when *I* want to make a call, which has only occurred two or three times in the last dozen years. That means that you would have to call me, when you had the time, and Michelle would have to be home at the time. She's home more often than not, and has regular patterns: taking both sons to different schools in the morning and picking them up again around noon. There are other things she goes out for, but they're sporadic. It might even be that you have to arrange with her for a time when she knows she'll be home. If we can get around that, I'm virtually always available.

I will seriously try to log in here more often. Maybe not daily, but at least a couple of times a week! Shame on me for letting my life run me instead of the other way around! You'd think I was getting old or something.

I never answered the first part of this, so here goes: I haven't expected to be able to go to space since I was your age or a bit younger, although when I was in my teens I was certain that I would live on the Moon. I'm older now, and have different concerns that teenage me wouldn't understand. I know that my time is past. I could have done better with it, but I'm satisfied that I enjoyed enough of it and I accept that the rest just provided background so that I would enjoy the best parts all the more. Now I'm thinking of my descendants, and not just the ones currently alive. I'm thinking of all of my descendants for as far into the future as my mind can imagine. I want them to survive, even after the Earth becomes uninhabitable. After the sun has died and taken the Solar system with it. I see the same desire in Elon Musk, and I support it wholeheartedly. If he becomes the first Trillionaire and the richest man on the planet it really doesn't change anything, for me or for Elon. He's hoping to be one of the early Mars colonists, and he literally can't take his wealth with him. He accepts that it will be dangerous and that he might well die sooner than he would if he stayed here, on Earth. But it's his choice. His whole effort from starting PayPal to buying Tesla to creating SpaceX has all been with this goal of becoming a Mars colonist in mind, along with making humans an interplanetary species. Personally, I'd hope that it would become an interstellar species. I know, I have read too much Science Fiction!

As for Tom, he's a mostly harmless old man. We need the Social Security money he brings in, and it really does take two to keep up with my grandsons. That's two with legs, unfortunately. I'm not afraid of him, nor is Michelle, unless he's drunk, which isn't often, and I don't think he'd even hit either of us then. He has punched a hole in the wall, though, and later patched it himself.

Jerry, even if Elon gets society there - you and I are never leaving this rock. Have you ever watched the movie Gattaca? If not, rent it, stream it, steal it... whatever... it is a relevant discussion and you'll enjoy the movie.

I'm sorry you had a fucked few days. A 6'2" man running up on a man with no legs is pretty brave. I'd like to see the big motherfucker try that with me. He would find that I'm 5'10" of out of shape fucking *mean* that'll rip his balls off and gouge his eyes out if he doesn't take me out quickly enough. Nothing I like better than fighting a guy with a huge size advantage. I lose, I got beat up by a bully who should pick on guys his own size. I win - which happens - and I'm a fucking warrior. It is only a loss for him, and only a win for me - no matter how it goes.

Just give me a ring whenever you get the time and we'll do the Team Viewer and I'll get things set up. I did a remote session to a friend's workplace PC today and fixed him up. It is quick and easy. We just need to make the time.

Chin up, dude. Don't worry about tomorrow. Make the most of now.

This is an awesome story - back when really smart kids were doing shit in their garages that they read about in Popular Mechanics and causing the local Barney Fifes to lose their minds. :D
Leif Johnson used to go around the day after 4th of July and get EVERY dud firework in the gutter - take them home, split them all open, harvest the black powder from them, and pack it all into a cardboard tube wrapped up super tight in duct tape and make basically sticks of dynamite. My generation is where all that shit stopped. None of the poindexters my generation became chemical or electrical engineers - we all became computer hackers.

Sat Dec 04 2021 16:50:04 MST from Jerry Moore

I can't believe that I haven't logged in here since October! After that last incident I had climbed into my safe hole with my computers and let my obsession personality take over. I became obsessed with reading Science and Technology news and sharing the articles I liked and letting my daughter bring me my meals and supplies while I just kept on keeping on. I was still doing that today when I came across an article about a new, expensive pistol that was an electronic rail gun. I was highly amused because I had built an electric rail gun, back in the sixties, when I was a teenager in Junior high, from the detailed description given by Arthur C. Clarke, one of my favorite Science Fiction writers back then, in one of his Science Fiction stories back then. My introduction to the article included a lengthy story of the project I had built back then, and when I shared the article I saved the introduction text to my notepad program on this tablet. That done, it occurred to me that you guy, here, might be interested in the story. It was a different world back then, before so much of the technology we now have and take for granted. I wound my own coils and figured out how to make other things I needed for my projects. Anyway, I logged in here and was amazed that I'd missed November entirely! Before I forget, here's the story:

Second article that's made me laugh today! I first read about the concept of a rail gun over sixty years ago in a Science Fiction story by Arthur C.Clarke when I was a teenager. Now, it was on the Moon, and it was designed to shoot metal pods filled with ore mined on the Moon, along a track that was probably a block long or longer. It would get them to Moon escape velocity and thus launch them into orbit, where they could be picked up but a rocket to be taken elsewhere. This sounded like something I could build a scaled down version of, with stuff around the house and electronic surplus I could buy locally. I was already building small electronic projects and this would fit right in! I bought a couple of industrial size transformers for the wire they contained, and grabbed an eight foot long piece of outside moulding ( long piece of wood designed to cover a corner, so it looked like pacman with his mouth open at a right angle in profile) for the barrel. You can read the article for details on how it works, which were well described by Clarke in the story. The trigger I made from a six inch square piece of wood, a whole package of plain steel carpet tacks, and a three inch length of flat steel girder from my Erector Set. I used string and a tack to find the exact center of the board and pushed the tack in there. I used the string, a pencil and the first tack to draw a circle around the center tack, then used the other tacks to make a circle of tacks, not quite touching, over the penciled circle. This was my circular switch, which would direct power to the individual coils of wire from the transformer. I made one coil for each tack, then threaded them onto the moulding so that they could move independently. I had a huge ships cylindrical battery from which I could run wires to the switch and coils. One wire went from one terminal of the battery to the tack at the center of the switch, and other wires ran from each of the tacks in the circle to one side of a coil on the moulding. The other battery terminal had a wire running to the other side one of the coils. It didn't matter which coil, because the unused side of each of the other ones would be, connected to the others, in series along the moulding by long lengths of wire, so that they could be adjusted as needed. When the outside of the switch was touching a tack, the coil, which was an electromagnet, would get power and be able to attract something metallic, like a nail. There was a large pail of "headless" nails left over from some project that were about as long as my forefinger and were ideal for my project. I built a base for my "gun" on a saw horse that was in the garage, using other pieces of scrap wood to elevate the front about half a foot. The first attempts were pathetic, until I got the magnet coils adjusted properly and got the rhythm of moving the switch over the tacks down.  By then I could hit the back fence, across the whole yard, hard enough to sink the nails into it. That was on a Saturday, because I was home alone (My mom often worked seven day weeks). The door bell had a transformer in the garage that buzzed when the bell rang. I heard the buzz and went through the dining room to the living room and opened the front door to find a cop standing there!  He said they had a report of someone firing a gun. I took him to the back and showed him my rail gun - and demonstrated it. He told me that there would be no charges if I just took it apart and didn't try any more projects that threw things. Long story, but, in retrospect, my ptoudest moment! 💖🌕🔬💖

Glad you liked the story! I'm really here by accident this time. I was reading an article when this Amazon tablet, which has been acting up lately, suddenly threw me into the web browser, which was still locked on your board, even though I'd logged out. So here I am! We really have to get together to fix my desktop computer problem. I would love to be able to access this board with the surface with copies of the pictures I was uploading before, but those are on the desktop, which could call you, but is more wearing for me to use. If both my Windows 10  computers were able to connect with each other on my network, I could transfer the files across and use the surface from here in bed. I'm in no particular hurry, since I don't think I'm going to die this year, and probably not next, and I find enough to do on FarceBook.

Well, I do miss the photo uploads - and this place is pretty dead at this point... so more action that keeps me AWAY from Reddit is always welcome, as that place is a shit hole.

So... During the next week... give me a call. You've got my phone number. Just call me. It'll probably take 20 minutes to get them working. I'll probably just remote into them.

Grumble! Long message typed in, then lost when I jumped to a link embedded in a text file I had just pasted into the message. I was complaining that the links I had saved to around eight hundred Science and Technology articles I had shared on? FaceBook recently were no longer working, and on my Facebook page they now showed up in the saved links folder as unavailable. I figured that I might have exceeded the number of links I was allowed to save, but when I tried to access the links from the text files I'd saved them to on this Fire tablet, I got a "file does not exist" error. Now, I've gotta go back and see if things are working again, or if I just can't access them from this tablet. I'll paste the links into this message again so that you can see them anyway. The question I had, since I don't do HTML, is if there's any way to cut FaceBook out of the loop and just get the code to link to the articles at their sources?

Interesting. I got a totally different result from clicking on the same link than when I hadn't saved the message yet. It's an error message from FaceBook about having been sent to a malicious website. Could they mean this one? All the more reason to modify the HTML to kick them out of the loop! After I save this post I'm going to try an experiment, and start a new post, save the links to it and jump to one without saving the post first.

Interesting. If I don't save the post, I get a "you are leaving FaceBook" message and after clicking to confirm, I get to the article! If you can help me with fixing the HTML, I can contribute these articles (or at least appropriate ones) to your board!. I might even be able to retrieve the introductory text from my original sharing on FaceBook and add it wherever appropriate. Back in a while - I've been too busy with this problem to share FaceBook memories on my page there!

Thanks! I'll compare mine to that to figure out how to fix the other eight hundred I have. As for the other problem, it went away on its own - either a FaceBook problem or an internet problem. I'm in the process of catching up on the two days of articles I saved but couldn't get back to so I could share them. Also copying the links to create a text file that I can email to myself in order to get the links to my Dell desktop. I'll be back here, poking around again as soon as I get those done, and possibly catch a nap. I may have picked up a bug of my own, and have had a few problems lately. Eager as I am to get things done, I've gotta take care of myself.

What I would suggest is go to the site through the Facebook link, CTRL-C the URL and CTRL V to paste it into a notepad text. Do this for every site you want to share here, and then just ctrl-c that entire body of text and ctrl-v it into a message here.

Because Facebook wants to believe I'm a dangerous alt-right white supremacist site.

Because they're terrified of this shit.

I guess that's me too, although I still feel like an old Kennedy Democrat who was driven from his party by invading Communists, er, Progressives.

I barely knew Jerry but losing him hurts in a way I didn't expect.  It's a weird little community that BBS people had, and one of the greats has fallen.  Much respect, Jerry.  Thanks for all you did.

Jerry only lived with us for a short time, it was hard to shove all those people into such a small apartment but I'm so glad I was able to convince my mom to take him in for a time. He was a good human and it was great to watch him get on his feet again and pull his daughter out of a bad life. It taught me some lessons that I wasn't able to fully appreciate at the time, but I hope have made me more compassionate.  I hope he was able to pass surrounded by family that loved him. Long live the king of Dragon's Den.

It has been hard thinking about the loss of Jerry.  It brings back all the memories of he and I sitting in the back room of the Dragon's Den comic books store setting up Citadel on his Heath CP/M machine.  I learned so much debugging the original Citadel code we received to get it to run on that machine.

And to think that that is what lead to the whole Sacramento Citadel boom and all the offshoot programs: SacCit 80, SacCit86, Asgard 80, Asgard-86, NovuCit and a few more that I can not remember right now.

He fostered the whole Citadel genre in Sacramento.  His contributions will not be forgotten as long as we remember him.
