So, overall - I'm really stoked about what I have achieved with Citadel - not just as a Facebook alternative - but the engineering that I put into it to get it running on a real Intel architecture Linux box, running under VM, with automated backups and a hosted static domain and DNS address. For a little bullshit home server - it is *very* over-engineered and super solid and reliable. 

I wish I had done it when there was a lot more traffic and a lot more excitement and people were logging in - because it is kind of getting it right after it doesn't really matter anymore. 

It doesn't really diminish the accomplishment of getting this thing up and running - and I could actively promote it and let it become a destination for people - and I think it could be successful in that sense - I think I could make it become a home-base for an active user base if I really put the time into it. 

But honestly - I don't - Every social media interaction is kind of a hassle - Reddit, Discord - everything I try - I just don't really want to have conversations with the majority of the people I encounter online - and that tends to cross partisan lines. I'm even sick of the people in the Retro Gaming communities - hell, even the BMW community is pissing me off - more on that later... 

It isn't just that I'm a grumpy old anti-social man - it is that the values of the mean demographic that is online right now - they suck. The people suck, their values suck, their interests suck, their attitudes suck. 

They're *mostly* Millennials. They're the group entering into their prime right now (and their PRIME sucks, too... BTW... Gen X got their shit figured out way earlier and way better than the Millennials...) 

They just ruin shit. And without a doubt - any drive to create traffic here would result in an surge of *them* visiting - and that is the LAST thing I want. 

This is too complex of a destination for anyone OLDER than the Millennials - and the Millennials are just too much of an ass-hat generation to want them to show up. 

So... as far as traffic is concerned - this is what it is. 

But... I'm still totally pumped about WHAT it is, even if it is a ghost-town.

I hit your BBS a couple times, and tried to create some content - but I've been very short on time. Can't even make it through my site most times, despite how sparse the traffic is here.

Yeah I feel the same way about my BBS. It took some work, and I like my text CAPTCHa, but I haven't had activity in a while. I agree about Gen X. They called us a bunch of losers and slackers. I guess every previous generation does. But that said I still agree.

 

Sometimes I'll do something for 15 years then get burnt out on it and need to change up my entire routine.  That happened fairly recently.  I stopped playing my blizzard games religiously.  Now I'm playing older games like Red Alert going through all the maps, and I'm reading again, which I love, and my work is getting busier which is nice.

But this is a nice place to rant, because it's a safe place to express my utter rage at what the millennials are doing to my planet.  I can see exactly why they're fucked up, and how it's not exactly their fault because the boomers refused to make ANY room for us at all, and it's only now when I'm 40 that there's even a possibility of sticking my toe into where I should have been 20 years ago.  But that doesn't change that you're right, they're fucked and probably irredeemable unless war with China kills most of them off or makes them face reality.

I just saw a facebook memory where a girl my age that I've been friends with for 25 years completely lost her shit at the idea that I was promoting drinking unpasteurized milk.

God damn all the busybodies who want to tell other people how to live.  If I give myself listeria that's my own damn problem.

I almost hope for a catastrophe, some sort of culling.  Ugh.

I'm similar. I've been very deep into the SSI Gold Box AD&D 1st edition CFRPs lately. It occupies the mind and distracts from the world going to shit.

It is the busybodiness that drives me nuts. Somehow being irresponsible with myself is always being selfish and irresponsible with THEIR well being. We bought an extra drink at a place, "for my wife". We were letting my daughter drink it. The waitress, a 20 something... was on us like a hawk, and eventually caught us. "I know what you're up to!" she said.

Fuck you. I could care less if you're on to us. Two parents are having a drink on the outdoor patio with their ALMOST 21 year old daughter. We're not teaching her how to shoot heroin, you fucking Karen. Now, go WAIT on people, like you are supposed to be doing.

Upgraded the BBS to 16GB this evening. Well - upgraded the VMHost to 16GB, gave the VM 7GB instead of 5GB. We were getting very close to that limit on occasion - hopefully things will run smoother with a little more memory.
